What on Earth Is Celestite?

What on Earth Is Celestite?

Celestite is one of the members of the Baryte Group of stones. This gorgeous crystal has a name that evokes its beautiful sky blue colour and its beneficial properties. Here's what you should know if you're considering celestite for your collection of crystals:

The Physical Properties of Celestite

Celestite is the strontium analogue of Baryte and a widespread strontium mineral. It's a 3-3.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, which makes it a somewhat fragile crystal that needs proper care. There are multiple shades of celestite ” you can find reddish, brownish, greyish and even greenish celestite, but its most sought-after variety is a soft light blue.

Celestite has vitreous or pearly lustre, and its transparency is translucent or transparent with a white streak. It has perfect cleavage, twin gliding and translation gliding parting, as well as an irregular fracture, making it difficult to facet.

The History of Celestite

Celestite has changed its name many times, but the one alluding to its sky-blue colour came from the Latin word caelestis and it was given to it by Abraham Gottlob Werner in 1798. Strontium itself was only described formally for the first time in 1792, although celestite crystals have been known long before that. It's found mostly in Namibia and Libya, although there are also localities throughout Europe and North America.

The Lore of Celestite

Celestite has a rich lore and has been known to many civilizations over the centuries, especially those who had a developed tradition of interpreting and seeking out tremendous or prophetic dreams.

In recent years, celestite has been mostly associated with providing connection to the angelic realms and believed it could help the wearer invite their guardian angel into their life.

The Metaphysical Properties of Celestite

The metaphysical properties of celestite are interesting to study, as it is generally considered to be a stone of spirituality that does not have a direct impact on our state in the physical realm. It can be of great help during a traumatic time, as it is believed to invite divine energies to course through the Crown, Third Eye and Throat Chakras.

Another one of its potent uses is in meditation, especially for wearers who want to get rid of feelings of anxiety, stress or obsessions. It's a staple in Reiki practice as it can help develop higher intuition.

Celestite makes unique pendants or brooches. Placing it over the heart is the ideal place to wear it considering its calming effect on emotional energy. This stone can help you let go of negativity and is especially beneficial to those who tend to hold on to negative feelings like jealousy or pride. Its way of evoking spiritual consciousness is said to make you more open and receptive towards other people, which in turn makes them tend to treat you better.

This beautiful stone deserves a place in your crystal collection with its ethereal, celestial appearance, as well as the beneficial effects it can have on your spirituality and intuition.
