Brief Description: Fluorite is a calcium fluoride mineral that is found worldwide. Fluorite is colourless and impurities of hydrocarbons produce the wide variety of colours including multicoloured and banded. Some varieties of Fluorite fluoresce. Fluorite is generally named after is colouration. Fluorite typically forms cubes and is relatively soft. Fluorite specimens will be found in most collections displaying light to deep colours.

Mythology:  Fluorite use goes back thousands of years. It has been carved into figurines, Gods and Goddesses, guides, totems and animals as well as bowls, cups, dishes and vases. It's beauty as well as the properties ascribed to it made Fluorite a natural choice in jewelry and amulets. The ancient Egyptians used fluorite in statues of the Gods and in carving scarabs. The Chinese have used it in carvings from ancient times. A fluorite carving the Mississippi Mound builders era, dating between 900 and 1650 A.D., was discovered by archeologist in a burial pit in Illinois near the Ohio River.

Usage: Fluorite is used as a source of fluorine for fluorinated water. Many people believe fluorite has a calming effect on the body. During the eighteenth century it was ground into powder and mixed with water to treat kidney disease. Ancient Romans believed that drinking alcoholic beverages out of vessels carved from fluorite would help prevent drunkenness, which is similar to the beliefs attached to purple amethyst.
